IN Cats Life in the cat world

Are you missing a cute black and white cat? I've been watching this one fend for itself in the fields by my house, thinking it must belong to a neighbor. But it's too skinny and far too eager to eat the cat food I put out. The cat is de-clawed. Nobody has reported a cat of this description to the animal shelter, so if you live anywhere near Nelson Road and used to have a black and white cat, call me! Rosi Slater 581-8371.

Our ten-year old daughter dressed our female cat - nicknamed "Fat One" - while she sat patiently. The crossed legs are not staged!

This picture may show the cat on a walk but at the slightest disturbance the cat bolts and almost strangles itself. Has anyone successfully trained a cat to be a dog?

My youngest cat, Pie, should have been named Magellan or Sir Edmund Hillary.

He just has to explore new territories to their fullest... and CLIMBING, oh MY that cat can climb!

Once, I watched him climb a chain-link fence as though he were a monkey climbing a ladder. Just scooted paw over paw until he hit the top and could jump down.

He just wanted to roll in the mud in the neighbor's yard.

I had to rush home yesterday evening, because he was missing in action when I called to see if I needed to stop at the store. He had been missing for over an hour, and all the doors and windows were still shut and intact.

We finally found him... in the next door neighbor's closet.

We live in an old house that was turned into apartments sometime around 1929. There are more added-in features to that house...

Whoever put the closets into the porches did not wall them off all the way to the ceiling. Apparently, Pie did his ladder-crawl up the shelves and popped over the top into the neighbor's closet.

Poor thing was so scared...

Lucy, my Ocicat (Abyssinian/Siamese breed), got suddenly ill this week and I took her to the vet hospital last night. I'm waiting to get more results but sounds like lymphoma (cancer). She's 7 and has always been extremely healthy, so it's making me sad. Her kidneys & lymph node are severely swollen & she's had a very high fever that isn't responding to antibiotics. She looks, well, really sick.

This picture is of her & my chocolate Lab Cosie when they were both toddlers. They get along so well together and I know Cosie is sending good puppy thoughts to Lucy now.

They normally see the ladies at Creekside Vet, who are amazing. They share on-call services with Dr. Cindy Moreaux, who owns the Banfield Hospital at PetSmart in Bozeman. Cindy has been amazing as well.

Does anyone have a pet who has been treated for lymphoma?

1. Quiet enjoyment. Your cat will probably not keep you or the neighbors up all night barking ceaselessly at every leaf that blows by. Cats usually just stare at you to get you to do stuff, instead of whining.

2. Self respect. Your cat has too much respect for him or herself to do tricks for treats, or play fetch, or follow you around like an obsequious, insecure, drooling dweeb.

3. Cat box. Your cat will not wake you up at 3 a.m. and make you walk around the block in the rain/snow/-20-degree weather, or force you to leave work twice a day to let him/her out, so he/she can poop. Your cat knows how to use its own little poop area, and will even bury the deposit neatly so you don't have to see it. Cats can even be trained to use a toilet.

4. Food. Put some kibbles in a bowl and your cat will nibble on it all day and not bother you. Cats have enough sense to realize that if the bowl goes dry, there will be more, and so they don't have to eat every crumb instantly. Your dog, on the other hand, will wake you up at 6...

People choose to declaw their cats for a number of reasons: Some are frustrated with shredded drapes or furniture, some are worried about being scratched, and others simply feel that a declawed cat is easier to live with. In many cases, cats are declawed preemptively, as a part of a spay/neuter package offered by veterinarians, even before claw-related problems occur. Is this inhumane?

Your cat may have something more than an eating problem... See your vet.

I've had a lot of cats over the years and it seems like about 25% of them have been water cats.

Thunder used to love to sit on the side of the tub and slap the water.

Squeaky, when a kitten, liked being bathed. He'd get into the tub whenever one of his people was having a soak. He'd try to get onto the kitchen counter to play in the water if you walked away from a filled sink.

Pie is fascinated with all things water. He puts his paw through the stream of water when his dish is being filled. He insists on having a look into the bowl when someone flushes the commode. He gets into the shower when you start the water, but jumps out before you get in... He always lets his people know when there is a dripping faucet. He plays in puddles. Amazing cat...

Thomas loves water. I don't know why. It's one of the funniest things. He likes to hang out in the sink. It's his happy place.
